4,404 Children Spending their Summer Break in Homeless Emergency Accommodation Is Unacceptable – Simon Communities of Ireland

The latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage show that the number of men, women and children in homelessness was 14,303 in June. This is an increase of 144 on the previous month. 4,404 of these are children.

These figures show an increase of 1,703 people (14%) in emergency accommodation in the 12 months since June 2023.

  • 2,093 were families – a 16% (289) increase in the year
  • 4,404 were children – a 17% (639) increase in the year.

Rebecca Hamilton, Policy Analyst at the Simon Communities of Ireland, said:

“This month we have witnessed another unprecedented level of homelessness. This is shocking, yet unsurprising. 4,404 children are spending their summer holidays in emergency accommodation and simply, that is not good enough.

It is possible to end homelessness. However, without a change in approach to tackling homelessness, we can expect it to continue to rise. Month on month, the Simon Communities of Ireland highlight how this crisis demands emergency action.

The absence of a secure and safe place to call home is devastating, often leading to isolation, poor physical and mental health.

Budget 2025 must reflect the crisis we are in and provide the necessary investment needed to make a meaningful impact on homelessness. The Simon Communities of Ireland’s pre-budget submission lays out a number of recommendations, including increased investment in social housing, homeless prevention and health support for those experiencing homelessness.”
