Press Release: Hopes Fading on Ending Homelessness by 2030

25th April 2025

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has released its latest report, showing that the number of men, women, and children experiencing homelessness reached 15,418 in March 2025. This represents an increase of 0.3% people compared to the previous month. 4,675 of these are children.

In the 12 months since March 2024, the data shows an increase of 1,552 people (11.2%) in emergency accommodation:

  • 2,212 were families, marking a 11.7% (231) increase over the year
  • 4,675 were children, showing a 12.7% (528) rise in the same period
  • 1,798 were 18-24 year olds, marking a 8.3% (138) increase over the year

Ber Grogan, Executive Director of the Simon Communities of Ireland, said:

“This time four years ago, it was reported that 8,060 men, women and children were experiencing homelessness. That number has nearly doubled since then. It’s hard to fathom how we can reverse these figures in the next five years without urgent action.

If we’re serious about ending homelessness by 2030, we need to start treating it like the crisis it is. Housing and homelessness must become a top priority for Government.

Our latest Locked Out of the Market report highlights the severe shortage of options in the private rental sector. We need to act now to protect people from falling into homelessness. Prevention is not only the most economically sensible approach – it’s also the morally right thing to do.”
